Chapter Two : My Starter

Logan sat on the tiled floor with his legs crossed, the glowing egg in his lap. Pieces of shell started to scatter on his pants and the ground, but it was still too bright to see what was breaking the shell apart.

"This is amazing!" Logan said in awe, his hands started to curve around the form breaking away from the shell.

"I'm just curious what it is" James said sitting across from the boy, shielding his eyes with his arm from the light.

"Oh…" Logan felt a large piece of shell fly up and smack his cheek, as well as something warm and fuzzy fall on his arms. The glowing finally subsided, pieces of the pink shell scattered everywhere. Logan blinked several times, trying to adjust his eyes to the normal light.

"I… don't… believe it…" James gasped, his arms moving from his face to look at the newborn.

Logan looked down at the furry form now cradled in his arms. It had pink tinted fur covering most of its body, a bright, blonde color covering its paws as if they were dipped in paint. Its tail uncurled over the boy's arms, landing its end on the floor. The tail was fairly skinny, but nearly twice as long as the body of the creature, the end of it fluffy and thicker with the same color painted as the dipped paws. Its ears seemed to be dipped in a golden color as well, and the very back of the creature almost looked like an inkblot of gold. Logan patted the newborn's head, feeling it stir underneath his palm.

"Wow… It looks so cute!" Logan smiled, continuing to pet the little one as he stood up. "Aren't you little one?"

The small creature's ears twitched at the sound of the boy's voice, its head tilting towards him. The small slits on its face started to open, revealing two hypnotic, gorgeous blue eyes. They blinked twice to take in what it was now looking at, its pupils dilating side ways into a sliver as it adjusted to the light for the very first time. Its chest expanded, filling with its first breaths of the world's air, its little mouth opening with hesitation. Its eyes focused up at Logan to meet with his glance, almost seeming to smile with complete awareness of who he was. "Mewww!" it squeaked for the first time in a small voice.

"Awww, such a cute little…" Logan smiled nervously, looking up at James.

"It's a female Mew!" James finally broke his period of silence and astonishment of the newborn pokemon, his hand trying to reach for it

"A baby Mew? You mean the legendary ones?" Logan asked admiring the pokemon's sheer cuteness.

"Of course the legendary one. Wow. Let me see her!"

"I don't think she wants you…" Logan looked at his new pokemon, its little arms grabbed at his shirt, trying to keep from the professor as if it were afraid.

"Hmm, that's strange…" James looked confused, closing his hand in disappointment.

"Hey, aren't Mew's psychic types?" Logan asked, his hand keeping the head up of the infant.

James nodded while crossing his arms. The white lab-cape behind him started to float backwards as he stood up, scaly black objects extended to his side from underneath. "Right, a psychic type like her would be weak against dark types. However, she shouldn't be pushing away from me like that, especially when I'm the one that took care of her egg for so long…" His cape floated back, softening behind him. "Either way Logan, it looks like you have your starter" he continued, taking a few steps in front of two. "However, since it just hatched from its egg, it needs to have a check up. Please follow me to the next room."

"Oh, alright" Logan chimed hopping on his feet, the little Mew nestled in his arms and against his chest.

Bright florescent lights started to flicker on as James clicked the switch at the front door. The room they entered seemed considerably immense as the three entered, stepping on black and white diamond tiled flooring. James walked over to the left corner of the room, approaching one of the countertops with white cupboards bolted to the wall above them. He opened one of the drawers taking out two latex cloves, fitting them on his hands for sterilization. He then turns towards Logan, who followed him slowly as he looked over the rows of standing shelves that filled most of the room, all of them loaded with metal balls of different colors, titles underneath each of them.

"Come here Logan, and place her here" James said patting his hands against a stainless-steal table between the countertops. Logan tilted his head as he made his way to the table. His hands built themselves around the Mew's chest, carefully detaching her from his shirt.

"She seems kind of scared…" Logan said, prying the last claw from his shirt, placing her in a sitting position on the cold steel.

"Whatever, just stand next to her and she should be fine." James approached the small cat pokemon, his hand softly petting it on the head. "There there, nothing to be scared of young one" he coaxed, trying to be friendly as he can be. "See? She is already getting used to me."

"Her ears are flatting backwards on her head, doesn't that mean she is mad?" Logan asked nervously, watching his Mew stare at James with glaring eyes.

What an ungrateful little thing, I saved you from being a pokemon omelet and you won't even respond nicely to me… James thought, reaching for a stethoscope on the wall behind the Mew.

You are not my master…

"Huh?"

"What is it? Why did you pause?" Logan looked at the professor, his eyes grew wide with his hand just inches from the item he needed.

"Ummm, nothing… it was nothing…" James took the stethoscope from the hook on the wall, fitting the ear pieces in to hear. He then held the very end to the Mew's chest. "Heart beats fine…" he then brought the end around her, focusing it on her back, leaning towards her left. "Take in a breath."

The Mew looked up at Logan waiting for a response. He smiled at her and she then took her breath a few times as James held the listening device to her.

"And perfect lungs" James said with a nod, putting the stethoscope away, and then he looked at her with cold eyes. "And her temperature is perfect too" his eyes seemed to flicker red with light blue blending into his normal eye color again.

"You didn't even take her temperature though, how can you be sure?" Logan asked looking at the professor.

"Trust me, you should know very well by now, so no complaining if I don't always use equipment. Nevertheless, she is in perfect health. Looks like you have a perfect companion to start your journey with."

"That's a relief" Logan responded with a sigh, picking up the eager Mew into his arms. The small pokemon started to purr, snuggling against his chest. "Wow, she is affectionate" the boy said with a brilliant smile.

"Now isn't that great. Well Logan, let's go into the Data Room and set you up as a new pokemon trainer of the Adamant Region." Logan nodded in agreement, following the professor as he exited into another room, a mechanical door opening and closing after them.

Logan felt a cold shiver run down his spine as he stepped foot in the Data Room, the coal black tiles below cool enough to chill his feet through his shoes as he walked on them. It was different in here; almost everything was black except for the monitors glowing a soft green from the computer's matrix codes. The ceiling seemed to go on in an eternal abyss of darkness; small twinkling's of light almost revealing constellations of stars at the very top. The Mew in Logan's arms closed her eyes; everything felt like the desolate environment of space, an intimidating feeling that could rise in anyone.

"You… I don't remember being in this room before… This is the Data Room?" the boy asked, his teeth slightly chattering as he held the pokemon in his arms closer to him for to warm them both.

"This room is a little different from most Data Rooms, Logan" James started to explain, making his way to the biggest monitor on the far wall from the door. He let his hands rest on a keyboard extending from the wall, all the keys of a normal computer, but buttons continued to spread out in different directions, all with different numbers, shapes, symbols and images. Clicking of the keys started to echo in the room as the professor started work on his computer, the screen above him letting streams of green and oncoming light blue numbers of data running by his eyes.

Logan blinked as he saw the numbers start to jump off the screen, starting to dance around James and returning to the computer. More green, blue, and now red numbers swirled around his body, building more and more as they started to condense around him. The room finally ceased the sound of James's typing, the cluster of numbers exploded off of him, flying back into the screen with a bright white flash. Logan then looked up at the screen, his eyes adjusting to the new light.

"That… is that me?"

"Good guess."

The computer projected an image of Logan's physical appearance, standing there in the near same pose he was in as he looked at it. His arms even cradled the same Mew that he was holding. Logan blinked as he looked at the image, and to his amazement, it blinked back at him. "It blinked!"

"Observant, that's good. The other trainers really got a kick out of this too. This is My personal Data Room, unlike any from any other Professor, Doctor, or Scientist you will ever see in the pokemon world!" James brought his fist to his mouth, his eyes closed with a pleased look. "Akin to what I said before, I'm an inventor, and I enjoy it when I can go to the next level of technology."

"What was all that typing about then? Did you take a picture of me or something?"

"Better, I typed in your very existence to the computer."

"How… Wait, what?"

"Enough of that. I needed to do this for the next thing I am going to give you. I believe you were looking forward to getting Pokegear and a Pokedex, right?"

The boy nodded. "Yes, I was hoping for-"

"You won't be getting any."

Logan felt his left leg slip under him, making him jerk to catch his balance. "Wait, why not?"

James held his hand forward, jumping towards Logan, his hand snatching the hat off of his head. "Because you are going to get something better!"

"Hey! That's my hat!" Logan exclaimed trying to grab it back from James. Logan flinched back as James leapt over him, gusts of wind seeming to press against him from above. Logan held his empty arm out trying to block the streams of air from distorting his vision. Above him, James stayed in the air, two sky black wings spreading from his shoulders, keeping him in place. "James, no fair! Give me my hat back!"

"Why don't you fly up here and get it from me then?" James taunted, ascending higher.

"But I'm…" Logan looked behind him, a nervous sweat running down his face. "Ummm, the moon isn't out. Yah, that's it!"

"Peh. Logan, you can be pathetic some times. A real shame too…" the professor pounded his wings against the air, stopping at the very top. A silver orb appeared in front of him, it looked to have shot from one of the corners of the room. It started to open up before him, only to be filled with Logan's thrown hat into it before it closed again.

"James! What did you just do to my hat? That is my favorite hat! Give it back!"

"Give me seven minutes, and you won't regret it" The two black wings folded behind the professor, hiding under his cape. The tips of his feet touched gently on the ground as he made a perfect landing, just feet away from the annoyed trainer. "Look behind you Logan."

Logan turned around, looking at the monitor that had his image before, but the image changed. His hat was there now, all black except for that perfect white cross on the back. "What did you do?"

"I'm about to make you the first trainer to experience a journey the way you will soon be able to" James started with a proud tone, a sly smile on his face as he spoke, his arms crossed in confidence. "Forget that hand held pokedex, forget pokegear, and forget backpacks. All you are going to need is the hat you already have. Now check this."

Logan watched as James pointed a claw to the very top of his hat on the screen. The monitored displayed a small white orb attaching at the very top of his hat, it melded into the half sphere making the regular point of his hat. His hat gave a glow on the screen, electric circuit paths appeared on the surface of the fabric, flashing white and then dimming, making his hat look exactly the same as before.

The boy watched the screen, curious what exactly the professor was doing. "What did you just do?"

"Remember I was telling you about my greatest invention? Well listen carefully, I noticed you always were a hat, and knew you were going to wear it on your journey. So I thought, since you are similar to me and have suffered some of what I suffered, why not help you out and model my invention to fit your needs?"

"Suffer. What do you mean? Why help?"

"Logan, don't act so confused. We are tainted human. You know very well I'm tainted with dragon. And I know you, you are tainted with angelfox. Even if you are able to hide it better than I can, I know people have given you a hard time about it."

A cold sweat ran down Logan's cheek as he watched his friend continue his speech. The professor's eyes looked almost snake like now, claws protruding from his fingers making Logan nervous.

"OK ok ok… just, tell me exactly what you are helping me with, enough of the 'tainted' stuff."

James smiled as he saw the screen highlight the words "complete", flashing widely over the hat. "I'll just show you." The silver orb James put the hat in earlier climbed from the darkness once again, hovering before him. It opened, letting James retrieve the accessory, walking over to the boy with it dangling in his hands. "Give me your back pack."

"My backpack? Why? I need-" Logan jerked to the side as James ran his claws under the shoulder straps, cutting it off of him.

"No you wont…" James tossed the bag into the air, shredding it with his claws. Logan's journey gear started to float in mid air, a dark energy surrounding them to keep them in place. James waved his hand, letting the clothing, food, and other items file into the hat one by one. The hat flashed at the top as each item went inside. Logan watched as all of his stuff seemed to disappear into his hat, and then he flinched when James suddenly fit the hat on his head, twisting it backwards as he preferred.

"Huh?" Logan blinked, adjusting the hat on his head. "It's empty, what did you do?"

"I fit it with an ES-Device, Logan. Like the keychain I showed you before that transported the egg case, this one is far more advanced."

"ES? What does that mean, and where did my things go?"

"ES means Exploded Star, which is complicated in itself since I had to blow up a star and then let it implode to… never mind, just call it the Eternal Stuff device. It has its own dimension in the little device at the top, and you can store infinite items inside of it that can go in and out at a single thought- Hey, I wasn't finished!" James frowned at Logan, who had a piece of jerky from his former stash in his hand to eat.

"What? I was hungry…"

"Well, at least you figured that part out. Just think of the item you want, and take it out of your hat. Like a magicians hat, but this is better and the real deal."

"My hat isn't even heavy, I like it" Logan commented, chewing on the jerky stick in his hand. The little Mew stirred in Logan's other arm, fast asleep, its nose started to twitch to the smell of his snack. "I wonder if she wants some jerky…"

"Not a good idea. Remind me to give you some formula for her before you go… anyway, the device. Check this, you wanted a Pokedex and Pokegear right?"

"Yes, I still do too if you don't mind."

James smiled, twisting the cap on Logan's head so the visor faced forward. "Well I do mind, cause you have this. Go ahead, try it."

"All you did was turn my cap around, I don't see anything else but the visor."

"Well look, the ES-Device has other things built in, a micro computer if you will and it connects to the visor. When you hold the cap and think of what you want, you can pull the item that you stored out of the hat no problem. However, if you turn the visor forward and say 'Micro Time', then just you see."

"Why 'Micro Time'?" Logan flinched as a holographic screen came down the rim of his visor, almost fitting as virtual reality goggles would, but transparent and further from his face. The screen flashed with 'Welcome: New User' on it. Logan looked at the screen, his eyes squinting do to the sudden light. "Oh, a real computer, that's cool."

"Ok, it is hinted a Micro Computer, but it isn't really a full fledged computer. It can perform all the functions of a Pokedex and the Pokegear, with the plus side that it can store infinite amounts of data you would normally perform on a computer. All you have to do is say the names of the menu options you see and you get what you want. However, if you turn your visor around towards a pokemon, it will automatically go into Pokedex mode and identify it. As well, the gear can act as a phone, a map, and it will help me help you."

"Hold on, hold on, you are making my brain hurt. This is too much info at once dude."

"Fine, fine. Then I will just let you find out all of its functions yourself, and as I said before, I will help you if you just call. My lab number is already in there, as well as my ES-Device number, but you probably won't want me explaining that, would you?"

"Not now thanks, I already have a headache… I don't think any of the other trainers were in here that long either, I only came in maybe twenty minutes late..."

"Logan, I'm trying to improve the pokemon trainer experience with this new technology, and I need an experiment. You've been my guinea-, I mean helper so far, so why not now?"

"Good point. I do like the Mew though, I can't believe you just gave me one without knowing it!" Logan held the sleeping Mew close to him; it was warm and soft in his arms. Its ears twitched as Logan spoke, unknowingly taking in everything they said.

"Fantastic for you, I don't care that much, but I do need to register her. So, question is, are you going to catch her or not?"

"Catch her? You mean put her in a pokeball?" James nodded with a look on his face that said 'No kidding'. "Right… but, I don't want her to be cramped up in a pokeball… I like her in my arms like this."

"You need to catch her and let her be in the pokeball at least once, other wise if you are not careful, someone else can try to capture her if you two get separated. Trust me Logan, do it for her safety."

Logan nodded, revealing the shiny gold and silver pokeball that was on the case before. "Huh?" the pokeball started to glow a light gold and pink mix, floating from Logan's hand. Logan looked at James with an annoyed look. "Cut it out James, I said I was going to catch her!"

"I'm not the one doing it, my aura is black" James insisted with an insulted feel.

The pokeball aimed at the Mew in Logan's arms, tapping it gently on the side. As soon as the button was tapped, a great gold and silver light engulfed the pokemon. The glowing laser light that came from the ball glowed for a few seconds, then finally diminished. "What just happened?" Logan asked with astonishment. The pokeball glowed once more, floating back to him and returning to his hands.

"Hmmm. I think she was listening to us and really wants you to be her master Logan. She looks, happy just being with you. Though, I don't think she likes the idea of being in the pokeball at all." James smiled, even for his cold serious attitude, one could tell he was awed.

"Then what just happened? Did she get caught?"

"No, I think she just made herself catch proof." James looked at Logan, his face revealing confusion. "Oy. When a pokemon is caught, the pokeball's laser light makes it so it can not be captured by another trainer's pokeball. The light is registered in her skin, kind of like a permanent yet invisible, but readable, tan."

"Why wouldn't she want to go in the pokeball though?"

"I can think of two reasons. One, she is claustrophobic, or two, she doesn't want the pokeball to change her. Getting hit by the light means you can't be caught by another, getting caught in the light and going into the pokeball will change them so they only obey you." James nodded, agreeing to the pokemon's choice.

"I see. She doesn't want anyone else to catch her, she wants me to be her trainer, but she wants that loyalty to come from her and not the pokeball. Did I get it right?"

"Right on the money. You better make sure you keep your pokeball at all times though. It is a prototype."

"Prototype? Prototype of what?"

"Ummm… Oh, uhhh." James pointed to a flashing light coming from the back of Logan. "Logan, turn your visor around, it wants you to name your new pokemon so it can register her as your first." James nodded as Logan turned his visor around for a small screen to run down the rim of it in front of him. I guess the pokeball still registered her as caught after all…My prototype is working perfectly…

"Name her? Huh… That… I think I will call her…" He pressed the keys in his visor for her name, and then pressed enter. Her new name was accepted.
It's sunday again, so here is the next chapter. How many of you would have guessed that would be my first pokemon? Cause hey, it is my number one favorite after all.

Yes, I expected as much, but I originally expected it a little later on.
Well, I was wrong, and that's a good thing. Another proof that you're a good author.
